Facebook used to identify party brawlersPOLICE have released video footage of a violent brawl at a 21st birthday in which 10 men attacked bar staff with weapons.
The girl hosting the birthday party refused to co-operate with police, but a victim identified his alleged attackers when police showed him photos from the party posted on the birthday girl's Facebook page.
The brawl occurred at about 12.30am on Sunday, August 16 at the Equinox Bar in Melbourne's CBD.
A group of men carried out the unprovoked attacked after a bartender spoke to them when they smashed a window in an outside smoking area, Detective Senior Constable Evan Billinge said.
The video footage shows the men using a large ashtray, chairs and tables to attack a manager, bar tender and patron.
All three victims required medical treatment for lacerations but did not suffer serious injuries. Det Snr Const Billinge said it was disappointing the host of the party had not been co-operative.
"We received unsatisfactory co-operation from the female, it was disappointing,'' he said.
"Some photos taken by guests on night were posted by the lady who had the 21st on her Facebook site, the victims identified the picture.''
Police have released images of three men whom they believe may be able to assist with their investigation.

Who would expect that Facebook does 'miracles' at times like this. As the few of us were reading the piece of news above along with the news video footage, we couldn't help but to think what the news was meant to tell. Originally, the news was released to make a big hoo-haa over the matter because the birthday girl who posted the pictures on Facebook refused to co-operate with the police. The police probably believed that releasing the video footage would give pressure to the girl and make her confess the truth.
While we were watching the news video clip, we happened to see a poll at the side of the page. It was a poll to ask nations to vote whether the new bar at Docklands should be approved. Some have argued that the purpose of the entire news was not to catch these criminals and put them in jail. It looked more like the authorities were using this case to tell nations, " do not blame us for early closing bars and strict bars license grant." Some argued that the news does more good than harm, pictures, videos are up, so it's time for justice, catch these criminals then!
There were a few questions running on our minds. Why do they need the birthday girl to be the witness since there were already videos and pictures of the criminals? If there isn't enough evidence, it isn't right to release the pictures and videos on the news because that would be similar to defamation, is it? Is there nothing else they can do besides waiting for the girl to confess the truth?
I wish there's something more effective done than just making these criminals 'famous'.
